The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong – Foundation Gallery was established through a fundraising initiative led by Dr Patrick Poon Sun-cheong, Chairman of the Fundraising and Donation Committee and Governor, with the objective of raising funds for the construction of the Creative Humanities Hub.
Situated on the first floor of the Creative Humanities Hub, the Foundation Gallery is one of the four flagship facilities in the new building, offering 150 square meters of versatile space to generate artistic and cultural experiences for visitors. With its collection and special exhibitions, the Foundation Gallery promotes public participation in the arts and cultivates appreciation for creative works. Additionally, it aims to collaborate with industry partners to enhance HSUHK’s humanistic education and facilitate scholarly projects.
The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong held an appreciation and naming reception on 8 August 2024 to mark the establishment of its Foundation Gallery, thanking donors whose support strengthened campus facilities and fostered future cultural and artistic development.

The back bay of the HSUHK – Foundation Gallery is designated for the University Collection with items selected by the Working Group on Foundation Gallery Curation from among donated items in HSUHK’s possession. The exhibition is built around the idea of the Cabinet of Curiosities – the Wunderkammer of donations and gifts – with paintings, installation of small objects, and vintage collection.
Exhibition Period: 28 March – 30 April 2026
The exhibition’s title draws from Rabindranath Tagore’s Stray Birds, using “shadow” as a lens to examine how self-awareness forms through light reflections, personal experiences, and societal structures, while true existence often remains elusive. Layered, ephemeral imagery in reflective installations and paintings invites viewers to engage with the dynamics of “seeing and being seen”, prompting reflecting on the visible and invisible, the individual and the environment.
The immersive space is designed as an abstract maze of reflective black glass and red bulbs, echoing the venue’s floor-to-ceiling windows and Hong Kong’s layered urban architecture. As visitors navigate through the installation, their reflections illuminate, refract, and overlap, heightening awareness of their existence amid forces of resistance and dissolution.
About the Artist
Born in Shanghai in 1991, Wang Yi earned his master’s degree in Oil Painting from the China Academy of Art in 2016. A leading voice among China’s new abstract generation, he has been shortlisted for the Tomorrow Sculpture Award and the John Moores Painting Prize (China), and received the Porsche Young Chinese Artist of the Year Award in 2021. These international recognitions underscore his fluid transition across two- and three-dimensional media.
Exhibition Period: 19 December 2025 to 20 February 2026
This exhibition departs from the familiar graduation show format by celebrating the beginning of the educational journey rather than its end. By juxtaposing pre-university portfolios with Year 1 studio assignments, the exhibition traces the origins of creative growth, revealing how latent talents evolve into expressive voices. Featuring works from BA-AD and BA-CCI students at HSUHK, the exhibition presents a collective oeuvre, highlighting objects, models, paintings alongside this year’s wearable art.
